SHH Theory
SHH Theory is an independent Australian film studio led by filmmaker Michal Imielski, creating original narrative cinema shaped by performance, atmosphere, visual storytelling and an unconventional artistic sensibility.
Working across psychological thrillers, mystery, dark comedy, supernatural stories and intimate human drama, the studio creates distinctive cinematic worlds where the familiar and the unexpected meet.
Its films explore the tensions between reality and dream logic, belonging and displacement, tenderness and cruelty, often finding humour and strangeness within ordinary human experience.
Michal Imielski
Michal Imielski is a Polish-Australian filmmaker, director and multidisciplinary artist whose work spans cinema, theatre, opera, music and experimental performance.
A graduate of NIDA's directing program, his filmmaking draws on visual composition, physical performance, musical structure and the relationship between the ordinary and the surreal.
His feature film Dead Sunrise (2016) received a Silver Remi Award at WorldFest Houston. His wider creative work includes opera, theatre and interdisciplinary productions in Australia and internationally.
His latest feature, It's My House (2026), is a psychological thriller filmed on the New South Wales Central Coast, now in post-production.
Through SHH Theory, he continues to develop an international slate of original films and creative collaborations.
Artistic Lineage
Founded in the early 2000s, SHH Theory has a creative history spanning film, theatre, opera, music, puppetry and hybrid performance.
This multidisciplinary background continues to inform its filmmaking: the choreography of bodies within a frame, the expressive possibilities of sound and silence, the dramatic life of objects, and the relationship between movement, rhythm and emotion.
Work connected to SHH Theory has been presented through organisations and venues including Sydney Opera House, Riverside Theatres and CarriageWorks.
Today, that history forms the artistic foundation of a studio focused on original independent cinema.
